Has anyone been challenged yet by the law for going out shooting

Hi all, I have consulted BASC for guidance on this , they say carry written authority to shoot (pigeons etc ) but after watching the draconian abuse of innocent people just out walking or sitting on a bench with a coffee I am concerned that even written authority will not satisfy these over zealous law enforcement officers. I do not want to risk getting heavy fines for going out but the farm owners are getting concerned at my lack of enthusiasm , I am normally out 2 to 3 times a week but lately have been almost house bound due to the lock down rules.

I look forward to a time we can get back to normal, but feel obliged to show willing even in these difficult times.

Are they suffering crop damage?

Old women being man handled and hand cuffed because they went for a walk and stopped to sit on a park bench? That’s saving lives?

There’s illegal raves and gathering that are going on. The police turned up to one but didn’t break it up because the kids threw some bottles at them. They just waited for them to leave.

But an old woman on a bench is handcuffed and taken off? And that’s fine?

There’s nothing wrong with the guidance considering the situation we are in, but the actions of some individuals officers or even some Forces are not appropriate and they should be open to criticism and scrutiny!

Quite...the coffee on the bench isn’t allowed - far too many trying to find ways around the rules and socialising as exercise. I suspect that’s about to be addressed in the next days as it’ll be no meeting up with others. The great British public just don’t get it or wish to accept the severity of th3 situation at the moment.

I was hoping to be able to put a few fallow in the freezer over the next few weeks but I am not driving 30min to my perm with a rifle and falling foul of guidance and although I want some venison, it is not essential travel.

I am fortunate in that I can walk to most of my permissions but have driven occasionally. I don’t believe anybody has been fined for legitimate pest control but if they were to be I reckon it would be withdrawn on appeal as many of the fines are anyway.

My take is that if you can be fussy over going or not going then you aren’t undertaking essential pest control and not complying the terms of the General Licences. My farmer has made it clear he doesn’t want people who pick and chose when they come out.

In wales basc say since saturday night

Outdoor shooting activities as a form of exercise are permissible as long as you can access your permission by foot from your home and return by foot to your home; and ensuring that your shooting activity is carried out alone or with a member of your household or support bubble.

So on Friday I am walking down the main road gun in slip for a duck. Causing no harm and meeting no one. As I saw a chap put on another forum which I thought was well put. If I am good enough to work all week and keep the country running then I am good enough for a bit of me time

How does going out on your own and sitting in a muddy field waiting for a fox save a life ?
How does it expose anyone , except yourself to cold ?
Perfectly legal to go out for pest control purposes, if you dont want to , then dont.

Perfectly legal to go out for 'recreational' deer culling.
If you dont want to , then dont , but you wont win any medals .

I don’t think it’s that clear cut...basc guidance suggests only deer stalking is if on a written cull plan and “recreational” shooting not permissible.

I would counter that there is no such thing as recreational deer culling , hence the 'quotes' despite it saying just that in the BASC guidelines.

If you dont have a good reason for going out shooting deer, then I would avoid doing so anyway.

Any excuse I suppose.  I counted ten so called police officers, some wearing beanie woollen hats, since when were they uniform.  If I call in to say I have a break in to my workshop , all I get is a crime number.  As a retired police officer who spent his last tour on nights and had to hand two prisoners over to another officer to deal with, this makes my blood boil.

Use it or lose it.  Carry your written authority, and a screengrab* from BASC's website showing their formal advice.  Crack on.  See below if you don't know how to screengrab

The only thing I would be wary of is if the farmer had reported large amounts of members of the public deviating from any footpaths across his land.

Normal will include living with the virus.  It will not be put back in its box, and vaccines are not a silver bullet.  They just help develop herd immunity (remember that?).

*Unhelpfully BASC has not produced a 'printable' version of the relevant webpage, so you have to screengrab.  I hope that's cock up, rather than a deliberate decision.

I have a full letter from my farm/s. The one place in particular is paranoid about vermin in and around their herd of top notch dairy cattle so I spend three or four days a week checking that place out.  I drive there and drive back and will only stop on route at our village store to pick up any essential survival items or to refuel.  I use my common sense and keep well away from anybody and everybody. I use veterinary scrub on my hands on return not just basic soap.  All just basic common sense. I must say I see very little stupid behaviour from anyone at all.  Annual MOT tomorrow so will book in with my Dr for a jab, again just common sense.

Covid loves crowds so hence it is hitting big towns and cities with people living cheek by jowl and not necessarily breaking any rules.

Hi Alan .... When we had the first lockdown in March I got a letter from the estate classing me as a key worker as it was essential to protect crops and if I did get stopped ( which I never was ) I could show the officer I had good reason I was driving from A to B .

Just ask John or the owner to issue you with the same type of letter in case more restrictions are enforced and you should be in the clear if you were stopped on the way , or on the back from scanning the rape fields  ,

Mind you , to save you a journey the rape fields on B / L are totally free from Pigeons and this year even the Swans are giving them a miss . well they were Friday when I walked all the way round as my once a day daily exercise:no:
