It’s a balance between the hassle of dealing with cash and the cost of going cashless. Personally I prefer cash and for small businesses it makes sense to save them money. Certainly we have a few locally that will only take cash. One is the most superb fly tackle shop where you can get almost every item of fly tying kit you could want with personal service.

Is it not illegal to refuse legal tender cash?

the Govt will do nothing....'cause its excactly what they want....total control of the money industry...and the ability to tax everything without question.......it will stop those dirty little small buisnesses...making a few bob unseen...

its all just more and more control......the govt' are pulling their hair out on how they can cash in/ control E-Bay.....

There's only a few places I need cash, I'd happily have a semi cashless society, say any transaction over £20 must be cashless.

Best of both worlds then.

Why do you all want to cling onto cash?

Huge benefits to businesses, no staff sticking hands in the till, very easy tax and accountancy programmes, stock programmes, can automate lots of processes.

Huge cuts to operating costs if done well.

Not easy to avoid tax or do a bit of “contactless in hand” though is it.

People moaning “they’re spying on our transactions” whilst sharing tons of their personal data just by using the internet.

I bet everyone on this forum has tons of data about them known to social media companies / Google/ etc.

The only people not known are those hermits living under a rock off grid.

Aside from everything already mentioned above and next to gambling money away, I would bet that "cashless" payment is the biggest debt and will continue to be the biggest debt in society for many individuals.

People have been spending money that they don't have on credit cards and getting into massive debt for years, usually buying things they don't need and don't want, just to keep up with the Jones's and can't see it changing any time soon.

Call me old school but before all this "fantastic on the plastic" "buy now pay later" baloney,  if you couldn't afford it cash, you couldn't afford it...simple as that.

don't get me started on "credit score's" !!!! haven't got one as far as I'm aware and don't want one thanks, and never will....

As above.  Cash notes are legal tender and should be acceptable if they want to do business.  Letter to your newspaper. Unfortunately we have bred a whole army of lemings over the last 30yrs who will 'behave'.... look at the response to covid.

You have lost me whats it got to do with Covid :hmm:As for cash or card, it doesn't bother me i am happy to pay whatever way is asked.

What nonsense.

Before credit cards and buy now pay later deals people had loans, short term payday loans, bank loans and whatever else, formal and informal.

My great uncle told me many stories of his time travelling the World on the QE2, during the past well over half the tradesmen he worked with would be taking payday loans informally from their employer and all sorts to drink and gamble away.

Do your homework and you'll see that credit cards introduced back in the 50's and have increased consumer debt and helped to seriously damage economies, hardly nonsense if you study the facts

That comes down to personal financial responsibility, or lack of.

Exactly, and its been going on (or not) for years,

Started out in the USA with Diners Card and American Express being offered out to the masses, nearly a century on and with the massive interest rates charged means the masses are getting deeper and deeper into the mire.= to the extent we now have ordinary working class folks being made Bankrupt ...........

I liked it when you had one pound notes, how rich I was with a wad.

Back in the day when you could ask the question "how much for cash ? "when buying the likes of a second hand car from a non franchised dealer in the hope of saving a few quid, try it now and the young salesmen look at you like you have two heads and really don't understand why you don't want to purchase it on finance or better still lease a new one and swap it out every couple of years !!!  all for the price of a "never ending" second mortgage...
