Vote for the best shotgun ever made

I think that choosing the best shotgun ever made would be a matter of conjecture . Probably the most bomb proof gun ever made has got to be the old made in the seventies Baikal non ejector over and under The smoothest gun I have ever shot is my currant beretta gas gun with the kick off system . Probably the the most pretty gun I have seen is the boss over and under .

So a gun as bomb proof as an old Baikal ,as pretty as a boss over and under that shoots as smooth as a beretta gas gun . I don't think there is such a gun . I wish there was .

Best gun is a bit of a wide claim. Best what. A top contender has got to be the Browning B series. The last gun that John Moses Browning designed. This gun was an innovation that has become the market leader. A stroke of genius with its Solid design and function. A piece of pure genius. The design is akin to the design of the wheel. Primary thought. I personally prefer the feel of my B325 grade 5 over the son in laws Beretta but if pushed to chose one gun from my collection it would be the little 686 sporting special in 20 bore that mother bought for me as a present. Everyone that has shot the gun loves it and there is a crowd of people waiting for me to keel over so they can have it. God I can shoot with that gun and for me its the sentimental aspect. So what is best?

A somewhat useless post you may surmise, but alas, your views on the best shotgun ever made. Be it a Purdey or a Remington, a pump or a semi, all views and opinions gratefully received.

It may be based on beauty, reliability, fit or fornication, it doesn't really matter.

Has to be the Baikal for reliability. Benelli Super sport for looks.

my money is on the boss o/u such an elegant beauty, wish I could own one.

Good call on the boss

However I think the Woodward ou just has the edge 😋

I think the nearest to it is the Mcay brown in the modern makers near affordable and slight refinement on gape for loading

Value reliability got to be the bakil

Money no object gun

Boss serial number in the 7000

Or a late Woodward

Just my thoughts

All the best

I couldn't possibly narrow it down to one. It is all very subjective also and depends greatly on what someone means by 'best'.

My 'ideal' over and under shotgun would be an ejector in 12 bore with fixed chokes of perhaps 1/2 and Full. It would have a wide vented (or not) top rib with the bottom barrel only attached to the top one at action and muzzle, both of which would be blued. A small brass bead at the muzzle would suffice. The action would be a box lock, either blued or simply polished steel with no engraving at all and definitely no gold trigger, which would be adjustable for length, smooth and wide.

The wood would be nicely grained and dark oiled with a palm swelled POW grip and a full beavertail trap fore-end.

My ideal semi-auto shotgun would again be a 12 bore and probably a Benelli M2, and my ideal pump either a Winchester Model 12, 1897 Trench gun or 1300 XTR, or the Remington synthetic 870, again in 12 bore.

I think that we should categories this as it is not possible to compare a Purdey that has been made for 120 years with little change to a Browning A5 .

Suggest_

side by side

hammer gun

over and under

auto / pump

In my opinion British O/Us may look good but are not reliable.

Westley's Anson and Deeley boxlock Holland's Royal and Brownings B25 as well as his pump designs for Winchester must rank very high as they were effectively the forbears of all guns that came after .

John Dickson and Son round action, balance, elegance all in one package very biased as I own one. Earlier posters have mentioned the bar in wood round action , this was mainly a MacNaughton action and is perhaps even more eye appealing then the standard Dickson R/A.

It may not be the best shotgun ever made but for me I absolutely love my Farther's Browning B25 (12g O/U game 28" barrel). On the rare occasion I get go with it I just love it!

I hope one day to be able to take it on a driven day ! An ambition for sure. I could never let him sell it and would sell all my guns and rifles first to keep hold of it.
