WalkedUp
In hospital currently with my eldest son, aged 4. He got knocked over by an older boy in school last Wednesday. Anyway school said he was fine. He had a hematoma which seemed a bit much for a small bump of heads. This morning I got to work and then mulling it over randomly decided he still wasn’t right so got back into the car drove 30mins back to the school. I took him out of class (Reception). I felt his teacher was implying I was making a bit much of it but I have a thick skin and can deal with a bit of criticism for being over protective. Anyway took him straight to A&E, a male british doctor aged late 40s, very professional checked him over and said “he’s fine, just a small bump, but to avoid me getting sued I’ll get a second opinion”. A young woman doctor came in with pink hair, cat tattoos and facial piercings....I genuinely rolled my eyes. She assessed his swelling and said he needed a CT scan or MRI immediately. Typical woman over reaction... Getting a 4 year old to stay still for a scan was hard enough, especially for a pointless procedure when he’d be fine. The result came back, expected it to say, he’s fine just a bit of swelling go home and rest. But it showed he has fractured his skull and has a bleed on the brain. I felt physically sick and couldn’t speak. Rushed to the neurological department and has to call my wife to tell her to come down to the hospital. The crazy looking lady doctor was spot on. We have to stay in hospital for a while but he should make a full recovery. He’s obviously hard as nails, fractured skull, no pain killers and was still running round with his younger siblings. I was furious with the school, turned out he’d been knocked unconscious by the first impact and hit his head falling backwards unbroken. Hospital spoke to the school to investigate but have concluded there is no fault, their response was correct and it was just a freak accident. I genuinely can’t believe it has happened to us. Benthejockey
If he was knocked out and the school didn't tell you then there is fault. Even if they only had the suspicion of a KO hey should have mentioned it. Concussion alone is a dangerous thing and can, I believe, be detected on the brain 7 years after the event. Depending on how ambivalent you are towards the school and whether you want to pursue it you might want to seek legal advice. Personally I'd go up the wall. Kids are tough but hope he gets better soon.

ditchman
they should have risk assesments and method statements and COSH sheets.....and the teachers should understand them...........something very not right about this.....you cant stop children having knocks and bumps....that is no fault of the teachers....what is the fault is not reacting to the accident correctly.......... WalkedUp
Thanks for the support guys, I don’t want to pursue the school or anyone, just ensure my son recovers and that appropriate procedures are in place when incidents like this happen again. A no blame culture is generally my ethos, a cool-headed ‘what went wrong and how do we fix it?’ The school accept they didn’t know he’d been knocked unconscious, but I find it inconceivable that a 4 year old child can be knocked unconscious in the best school in the borough and it can be dismissed as a bump of heads. Supervision levels at playtime may need review, as does medical assessment procedures. Lessons I can learn are about judging people on appearance and also learning to trust my gut reaction more so that treatment is delivered quicker. I’m sat over his hospital bed now as he sleeps, plenty of time for self reflection.

figgy
Best of luck your little man will be fine after this. School needs speaking too, any child being knocked unconscious should have a hospital visit.
mel b3
Well done on trusting your instinct , it rarely fails . Kids can be pretty tough little things and bounce back very well . I hope that your lad makes a full and speedy recovery. Well done with your positive attitude towards the accident and the school , if it was me, I'd be making the headmaster's lip tremble , just to make sure that things were done correctly the next time. JohnfromUK
I hope he gets over it quickly. I was knocked unconscious about that age (falling off a 5 bar gate!). Had a Dr. check - and all OK. As far as I know(!) no long term effects (I'm in my 60's now and I think - no more deranged than any of my contemporaries). sam triple
Hope he makes a full and speedy recovery ,my son had an accident at school ,the school just skimmed over the incident as quickly as they could almost brushing it aside , im aware accidents happen especially when theres hoards of kids running around and im sure we cant expect 10s of teachers or helpers in the playgrounds at every break , but a bit of compassion would go a long way ,the cynical part of me thinks if they are scared of being sued
JTaylor91
Wishing him a speedy recovery. I have the usual male attitude of unless I genuinely believe I could be dying I won’t go to a doctor. With a baby on the way I may need to re think that attitude. Diver One
I wish him a speedy recovery. Parental instincts are invariably correct long story short... eldest granddaugter (9). At 18 months my daughter thought she wasn't walking correctly, so Health visitor....she's ok Doctor....she's ok paediatrician...she's ok so,daughter kicked off and fought for an X ray. Ten minutes later she is told that there is NO ball joint on left hip!! Emergency trip to Alderhey. Consultant went off on one. "How has this child got to,this stage and it's not been picked up?. Anyway, 5 hours in theatre and 5 months in a 'chest to toes plaster cast . So she had to be carried everywhere by my daughter who was pregnant with her second at the time.. 7 years on and All is good now. trust you instincts , parents know best
WalkedUp
Glad to hear your granddaughter is ok Diver One. We were on the cusp of being transferred to AH last night, as the regional specialist hospital for children. However we have seen consultant again today and looked at the scans so can see the damage so to speak. Fingers crossed will be on the mend now, his birthday is next week so he’s desperate to get out of hospital and back with his brothers. Diver One
It was heartbreaking to go and see her in Alderhey the day after her Op....we were in a total blur Then on the way out ( hadn't noticed on the way in) we passed the children's burns unit and things fell into a bit more perspective. I still fill up now when I think about it here's to a speedy recovery
WalkedUp
Just an update to say my son is perfectly recovered now. We bumped into the pink-hair crazy-cat-tattoo doctor yesterday whilst all out walking the dogs. If it wasn’t for CV-19 and her being on the phone I would have stopped to say thank you to her.
