My family tree like most in the UKs almost certainly goes back to peasants and surfs. What on earth do I owe them repatriations for. The whole thing is ludicrous.

Perhaps we should start locking people up whos great grandparents broke the laws of today to.

Absolutely.
They cant even accuse our ancestors of voting in the government that supported slavery, because we couldnt vote 😆
Best bit is, if the Brits didnt take a stand for the abolishment of African slavery, it would have gone on far longer.

This. Always was. Always will be. This.

If you, today, still directly benefit from it then you still, today, directly hold the "amount owing on account" to be paid for it. And by vice versa if you don't and didn't hold any direct benefit from it then you've nothing owing.

James Connolly on George V on his State Visit to Dublin in 1911:

We will not blame him for the crimes of his ancestors if he relinquishes the royal rights of his ancestors; but as long as he claims their rights, by virtue of descent, then, by virtue of descent, he must shoulder the responsibility for their crimes.

Correct. And rightly therefore you owe nothing. But there will be those who own great mansions and grand houses bought on the profits of slavery by their forefathers that perhaps do? It was, some sources claim, only in the last decade that the UK Government finally paid off the interest on the instruments it took out to compensate the great sugar plantation owning estate families when slavery was abolished.

Yes like my family. An agricultural worker in those days was no better than a slave

I regard those who cry for reparations as idiots. They draw a line in the sand which suits their purpose. They don't go back to the Roman days, nor do they look to the slave labour in Germany, Burma, China etc in far more recent times. They also ignore the Barbary Coast pirates who took Cornish people as slaves. Unless someone can prove that my family directly benefitted from slavery, it has nothing to do with me.

Frankly it is pathetic.

I don't want to go off topic here but just where is the world heading. Common sense appears to have left and been replaced with the feelings of a looney minority in relation to all sorts of topics. All this in my own life time. The thought of where it all ends up is frightening.

Why should I pay for what happened 250 years ago  we should be suing the Italians for the romans taking most of England and using us as slaves 😂 the most stupid woke thing I have heard for ages  oh I have got a solution say sorry for our forefathers history that sorts out one of their arguments and you can have a million pounds compensation each if you can get your great great great grandad that died enslaved in 1850 to personally come up and take his cash until that jog on

This is surely akin to prosecuting parents for the wrong doing of their children, as they brought them into the world?

The sins of a person should die with that person. It is not to be inherited through a simple act of being born. Also, if we are using the mansion reasoning, at what point does someone hold a valid claim? I would suggest that person needs to be directly affected and be able to claim from that estate, and not a future bloodline.

At some point the buck has to stop.

Who would the reparation be paid to?

There have been a few high profile black people that have looked in to their families pass only to find out they owned or traded slaves, I think one is Idris Elba.

Would Barack Obama's ancestors think being a slave was a price worth paying for where it has put their family now?

The very word 'slave', derives from the name, 'Slav', the white eastern european people's who were enslaved by the Ottomans.

The Anglo's bought slaves from the west African states, who in turn raided interior tribes, sold family, etc, etc. I wonder how much the likes of Beinin are being asked to cough up?

No wonder this country is in debt, not only do we have to apologise for everything that happened in the past, we are expected pay for it, keep sending aid to all and sundry, accomodate and pay for economic immigration, it took us over 60 years to pay for the lend lease act for a war that some one else started.

As far as I'm concerned, no reperation, no more aid and no more economic migrants.

What is sad is having raped, plundered and pillaged our way across the world, led the world through the industrial revolution, had a good chunk of oil and gas reserves, that we now have so little to show for it.

That would be nice.

I'd be just as happy for Starmer to simply come out and say no chuffing chance, that would be a great start
