Anybody ever been to Spain?  I have heard some amazing guitar playing in small back street bars. Flamenco, mind the dancers gyrations and local hooch may have influensed....

No, jolomg apart there are some brilliant guitar playes over there BUT different style.

Check out Friday Night In San Francisco by John McLaughlin, Al di Meola and Paco  de Lucia. It is an epic!

This is about the same as which is the best shot size or choke or anything.  How can a flamenco guitarist be compared to jazz.or rock and it's all subject to the listener. There are so many variables and for every name on those posts theres probably hundreds or thousands who never get known.

A brilliant all rounder... Malcolm Jones (Runrig).

Seconded - I've watched "The Last Dance" over and over since it was on Sky Arts a couple of months ago and really taken with him.
Such an unassuming guy, on stage dressed like he had just nipped out to the supermarket, but hard to imagine anyone else meshing with Runrig's style the way he does.

Dead or alive?

Jimi or Randy Rhodes are probably the greatest (rock) guitarist of all times.

Zakk Wylde is the greatest (technical) guitarist i've ever seen

Other greats, Tony Iommi, Steve Vai, Matt Bellamy

Bass players either Cliff Burton or Robert Trujillo

Technique - Ernie Isley can do anything Jimi Hendrix could do.

If you want fast - Ollie Halsall.

Recorded output - Jimmy Page.

Before Jimi died, he never made the top spot. It was always Eric Clapton, Jimmy Page and then Jimi Hendrix. After his death, he suddenly became better. Not sure how that works.

The Yardbirds had more than their fair share - Eric Clapton, Jimmy Page and Jeff Beck.

If you want fast watch Zak Wylde
